Biba TERAN:
A long-lived memory. Can the survival of Hallstatt rituals be seen in carnival celebrations in Slovenia?
Abstract
This article analyzes certain iconographic motifs of situla art (ploughing, making sacrifices, simplegma) and the artistic narratives of the eastern Alpine and Pannonian Hallstatt groups (zoomorphic figures, female figures in poses of worshippers, dressed in fur clothing), which exhibit similarities in structure and content despite stylistic differences. Their comparison with carnival celebrations (zoomorphic masks, ploughmen, wedding processions) permits the hypothesis that ceremonies similar in content were depicted on the Hallstatt monuments. It is considered that the present-day carnival customs are traces of survivals not merely from the Roman period, but also from the Hallstatt period.
