Milan LOVENJAK:
Roman inscriptions from Celje, discovered between years 1991 and 2003
(Die römischen Inschriften von Celje, gefunden in den Jahren 1991 bis 2003)
Abstract
The article discusses Roman inscriptions discovered during the construction on the Mariborska Road, as well as during archaeological excavations in the area of Mohorjev atrij and on the courtyard of the Knežji dvor (Princely Court) in Celje. The greatest number of new inscribed stones were recovered at Knežji dvor, where discoveries were made of part of the late Roman walls, the remains of Roman roads and buildings, and several medieval construction phases, the inscriptions having been used as a building material. The more important finds from Knežji dvor include a dedicatory inscription for Belenus, a fragment of a late Roman imperial inscription, an honorific inscription to Iulia Procilla, fragments of two honorific inscriptions to Varius Clemens, a tombstone of a previously unknown duumvir of Celeia, and a tombstone of the members of the Ennii family. A votive altar to the Genius of the city of Celeia and a large funerary stele were found at Mariborska Road and a small undetermined fragment of an inscription at Mohorjev atrij.
