Christoph GUTJAHR and Georg TIEFENGRABER:

The medieval fortification "Turmbauerkogel" near Eibiswald (Ivnik), in the district of Deutschlandsberg, Western Styria
(Die mittelalterliche Wehranlage "Turmbauerkogel" bei Eibiswald (Ivnik), Bez. Deutschlandsberg, Weststeiermark)

Abstract

The fortified seat of Turmbauerkogel (Gem. Großradl, Bez. Deutschlandserg), which is composed of two elevations (Turmbauerkogel I and II) with a suburbium, lies approximately halfway between the upper Saggau valley and Radelco/Radlberg (Radlpaß/Radelj 669 m asl), thus on an important transportation route - in the regional sense - in the central Drava valley. It has been the subject of historical and archaeological research for over a hundred years. The article presents the majoirty of the material from the excavations of the Institute for Prehistory and Early History of the University of Vienna (Institut für Ur- und Frühgeschichte der Wiener Universität) in 1968 on the southerly elevation (Turmbauerkogel II). The pottery material covers the span from the 12th to the 15th centuries, most being from the 13th and 14th centuries. The finds also include iron objects (keys, cross-bow bolts, nails and cramps) and stone cannon balls. It is interesting that the material also includes - although it partly does not belong to the entirely reliable site of Turmbauerkogel - Roman period pottery (e.g. terra sigillata) and a bronze pendant in the form of a bull's head, as well as some individual prehistoric fragments.
