Petra LEBEN-SELJAK:
The anthropological analysis of skeletons from Puščava above Stari trg near Slovenj Gradec
Abstract
The article presents the results of anthropological analysis of 53 skeletons from the cemetery at Puščava above Stari trg near Slovenj Gradec (5th -9th centuries), the intent of which was to establish whether or not a change in the population occurred at Puščava during that period (the previously present inhabitants from the period of late Antiquity as opposed to the newly arrived early Slavs). The results allow for both possibilities. There was no difference between the skeletons from the late antiquity period and the early medieval period in terms of the morphological characteristics of neurocrania, stature, and the degree of dental caries. The series as a unit is quite homogenous and in terms of the mentioned characteristics occupies a median position between comparative series from late antiquity at Pristava I and Vrajk on the one hand, and from the early Slavic period at Pristava II and Turnišče on the other.
