Anthropological analysis of skeletal remains from the Late Roman Necropolis at Rifnik
Abstract
The author relates the results of an anthropological analysis of preserved skeletons from the Late Roman Period necropolis at Rifnik near Celje (5th-7th century); however, the skeletal series also contains some skeletons from other, yet unidentified, sites. The results present an attempt to identify the skeletons, their sex and age structure, cranial and tooth characteristics, pathological particularities, epigenetic traits, and a description of preserved skeletal remains. Due to the poor state of preservation of the material the goal of the analysis, to obtain a referential skeletal series for the Late Roman Period in Slovenia, was not achieved.
Keywords: Rifnik above Šentjur near Celje, Slovenia, Late Roman Period necropolis, anthropology, craniometry, dental caries, paleopathology, biparietal atrophy
