Kampf oder Exekution?
Einige Anmerkungen zu den figural verzierten Bronzesitulen aus Grab 33, Hügel III von Novo mesto-Kandija, Slowenien
[A fight or an execution?
Some observations about the figural decoration
of a bronze situla from grave 33 in tumulus III at Kandija in Novo mesto]
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a new restoration of two badly damaged bronze situlae from grave III/33 at Novo mesto-Kandija in Slovenia. In the course of the restoration it was possible to reconstruct a part of the figural decoration of one of the situlae. In addition to an animal frieze and images concerning the so-called situla feast, an unusual scene was discovered showing two warriors armed with axes, who are menacing a naked and captive human on the ground. An isolated human head nearby arouses the reasonable suspicion that the two warriors are killing the naked person. This scene means that a human sacrifice or the execution of a human being was reproduced on a situla from Novo mesto
