Testimonianze di scultura di età gota e bizantina nella basilica di Aquileia e nella chiesa di Monastero. Nuove considerazioni
[Testimonials of sculpture from the Gothic and Byzantine periods at the basilica of Aquileia and the church of Monastero. New remarks]

Abstract

Embellishments were added inside the Basilica of Aquileia in the Renaissance, including a new floor, completed in the sixteenth century. Materials from previous furnishings, dating from the sixth to the twelfth century, were used for it. Among the items recovered during restoration work in the 1950s is part of a relief from the first half of the sixth century. To this can be added another relief, reworked in the fifteenth century, and some contemporary fragments of unknown origin, perhaps part of same elements.

The so-called 'muro di spina' (or supporting wall) built in the 1780s in the church of Monastero, when the monastic complex was acquired by private owners and transformed into a farm, was demolished in 1959. On this occasion over eighty fragments belonging to furnishings of the second phase (capitals, iconostasis columns, and plutei), dated to the beginning of the sixth century, were incorporated into the new building. An attempt at reconstruction highlights strong ties with early Byzantine sculpture and especially with examples in the upper Adriatic regions.

The analysis allows recognition of the vitality of Aquileia in the Gothic and Byzantine period, and the close links with Grado on the one hand and Concordia on the other.
