Eine Lampe aus der früh-äneolihtischen Siedlung von Zgornje Radvanje in Maribor
[A lamp from the Early Eneolithic settlement of Zgornje Radvanje in Maribor]

Abstract

This paper introduces an oval-shaped pottery find from part of the Early Eneolithic settlement in Zgornje Radvanje (Podravje, northeastern Slovenia). According to the 14C AMS dates, it most likely existed maximally 146 years (with 95% probability) in the period ca. 4300 BC. Due to the shape of the object, traces of secondary burning, and organic carbonized remains that are preserved on the object, it was assumed to have been a lamp. This hypothesis was tested with infrared spectroscopy (ATR IR), mass spectrometry (MS), and experimentation with making a replica. Finally, the results of X-ray fluorescence (XRF), which indicate that the object was most likely made of local clay, a comparable find from the same site, and some partly analogous oval-shaped finds from other Neolithic, Eneolithic, and Bronze Age sites, are mentioned.

Keywords: northeastern Slovenia, Zgornje Radvanje, Early Eneolithic, ceramic lamp, AMS-, XRF-, IR- and MS- analyses, experimental archaeology
