New epigraphic finds from Rogatica in Roman Dalmatia

Abstract

The paper presents new Roman epigraphic finds from the city of Rogatica (Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Hercego¬vina) and its vicinity, discovered in 2014 and 2016. The Roman settlement, possibly a municipium promoted to the rank of a colony during the 3rd century AD, was located in the eastern reaches of the province of Dalmatia. New finds include two altars, one dedicated to Liber and Libera, and the other, partially preserved, to Iuppiter Optimus Maximus, as well as one fragmentary monument with a relief depicting an unidentifiable male figure. The cults of Liber and Jupiter are already attested in the epigraphic material from Rogatica.

Keywords: Roman period, Roman Dalmatia, Rogatica, epigraphic monuments, Liber, Libera, Jupiter
