Culture from the cave Divje babe I
(Die Kultur aus der Höhle Divje babe I)

Abstract

The Divje babe I cave is situated in the dolomite and consequently the sediments are different to those known from other caves. The position of the cave along the climatic border impedes any explanation concerning the course of sedimentation. Four bone points, one of which the base is split, were discovered in the highest cultural layer 2. The determination that they are Aurignacian seems reliable. Contrary to anticipation, traces of culture in the deeper layers 4 through 26 are not considered Mousterian. Elements attributed to the Upper Paleolithic are also highly represented; fragments of four bones points are among the material finds. Select characteristic Aurignacian types are lacking from among the stone artifacts, which consequently rules out this culture. The author determines that modern man was present here already prior to the extinction of Neanderthal man. The course of communications and how the culture sustained and developed at Divje babe I are questions that have yet to be resolved. The bone flute, renown to the world as the work of Neanderthal man, must by all means be attributed to modern man.
